What about dyeing salmon? Where does the red color come from?Updated 12 days ago

A salmon's color (in the wild, and from farms) comes from astaxanthin, a powerful carotenoid antioxidant in the same family as beta-carotene. It's the compound that makes carrots orange and flamingos pink. It's naturally present in kelp, krill, and crustaceans, which form a significant part of the diet for most wild salmon.

At Seatopia, most of our salmon farm partners feed their fish a diet that includes astaxanthin. The vibrant color you're seeing is a direct reflection of that nutrition. t's the natural pigment stored in the fish's fat cells.

No Synthetic Coloring — Ever

Synthetic coloring agents are strictly prohibited under the BAP, ASC, and Seafood Watch certifications held by every one of our farm partners. What you see in your fillet is entirely natural — a marker of a well-nourished, clean fish.
