Is Seatopia's Seafood Sushi-Grade?Updated 9 days ago
Yes all Seatopia seafood is sushi-grade, arriving blast-frozen at peak freshness using commercial super-freezing technology. This process locks in quality, texture, color, and flavor in a way that matches or exceeds the best sushi-grade fish available anywhere. However not all seafood is best consumed raw (we prefer our barramundi baked, seared or grilled) and it is recommended to always cook shrimp.
What "Sushi-Grade" Actually Means
"Sushi-grade" and "sashimi-grade" are widely used terms for seafood considered ready to eat raw but there is no official, regulated standard behind these labels in the U.S. What actually matters is how the fish was handled, processed, and frozen.
How We Ensure Safety
The FDA notes that super-freezing seafood in commercial sub-zero storage — as we do with all Seatopia products — increases safety and is required for many species intended for raw consumption. Importantly, the FDA Food Code also exempts aquaculture fish raised to Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) standards from the super-freezing requirement entirely — a benchmark our farm partners already exceed. We super-freeze regardless, as a further commitment to quality and safety.
An Important Note on Raw Consumption
Consuming raw or under cooked seafood may increase the risk of foodborne illness, particularly for individuals with certain medical conditions. If you have specific health concerns, please consult your healthcare provider before eating raw seafood.
