Humane Processing & Fish Welfare at SeatopiaUpdated 14 days ago
Animal welfare is not a secondary consideration at Seatopia, it's inseparable from quality, integrity, and our commitment to the Seatopia Standard.
We work exclusively with farms that uphold the highest global benchmarks for animal husbandry and fish welfare throughout their lifecycle. Many of our partners hold certifications from BAP, ASC, and Friend of the Sea, programs that include specific criteria for low stocking densities, clean-water systems, and minimizing animal stress throughout the entire production cycle.
What Humane Harvest Actually Means
There is no single universal method for humane harvest, the most appropriate approach depends on the species and the aquaculture system. While pre-slaughter stunning is one widely recognized technique, it isn't always the lowest-stress option for every species. In some cases, individually stunning fish can introduce more stress than a well-designed group harvesting protocol.
What matters most is managing the fish's physiological stress response, particularly minimizing lactic acid buildup, which directly affects both animal welfare and the quality of the final product. Elevated lactic acid leads to faster spoilage and degraded flavor.
Some of our farm partners use traditionally and scientifically validated methods such as Ikejime, a technique rooted in Japanese fishing culture that prioritizes low-stress handling, clean dispatch, and rapid cooling. It preserves both the animal's welfare and the integrity of the flesh.
We continue to work closely with our farm partners to refine harvest protocols and expand the adoption of humane, low-stress techniques. This work never stops, because we believe the best seafood in the world should be produced with care at every stage.
